Verona ... Sidetrip or Overnight?

We have 3 nights .. possibly 4 in Venice. Thinking about spending night #4 in Verona. Good idea? Bad? Better for just a day trip and go back to sleep in Venice?

The next day we will be departing on train from either Verona or Venice to Cinque Terre. I thought departing from Verona would shave an hour off the ride and it would give us time to have a "passegiatta" in the evening, ride bikes in the am before departing on the train.

If you have stayed here.. any recommendations?

I think spending that night in Verona is a good idea. No sense backtracking if you've already had three nights in Venice.

There is much more to Verona than Romeo and Juliette, and you could easily fill two days there. If you can manage the time, visit the museum and theatre (over the river), climb the bell tower, tour the arena, enjoy evening drinks at Pza Brà. I stayed at a Best Western Hotel just outside the city wall near the piazza. It was in convenient walking distance to everything. Juliette's tomb was near but I have to admit that in two visits to Verona, and haven't been to any of the sites related to the story, which is, in fact, based on two local families.

I agree with Doug. Three nights is good in Venice and there is plenty to see in Verona. Spending a night there before moving on eliminates a sizable backtrack.

We spent 3 nights in Verona and found so much to do and see--you'll love wandering the streets and Rick's suggested walking tour is a perfect way to see the city. We stayed at Hotel Torcolo which is in a great location Hotel Torcolo

I'll second the recommendation for Hotel Torcolo. I spent two nights there in May. The two ladies at the front desk in the morning were delightful and very helpful.

I had great meals in Verona. I enjoyed eating outside at La Greppia. I also had a lovely meal at a small Enoteca near the hotel. Check the tripadvisor Verona forum for suggestions. The local expert there (Dave) has many good recommendations.

Diane, I'd also recommend at least one night in Verona (two nights would certainly be better!). I was there in May for a couple of days and really enjoyed my visit. There were sights I didn't have time to see, so definitely want to return!

I stayed at Hotel Europa which is about one block off Piazza Bra, and would certainly recommend it (listed in Rick's book). It's in a very convenient location, and lots of interesting restaurants in the neighborhood. It's also within easy walking distance to the large Castle (can't remember the name?) and the river.

As someone else mentioned, it doesn't make any sense to "backtrack". As you're heading for the Cinque Terre next, Verona is a good choice.

Happy travels!
