Verona or Torbole (lake Garda)

We will be driving from Venice to Bolzano in early July to visit friends. We will be picking up our car around 9:30-10am but do not need to be to Bolzano until 3pm (at the earliest.) So, we thought we'd do a small 'stop over' to break up the drive and see a little bit more of Italy. Both Verona and Torbole are on our way to Bolzano. Which would be better for a short 2-3 hour visit? We already know we will be missing a bunch at either town. Thanks for any information or suggestions!

Picking up the car where? Verona will suck up a lot of your time, park the car at the Parcheggio Arena just outside the ZTL and walk into the historic district, walk around and see the Arena, and the Piazza della Erbe and it is time to go back and get in the car and head out.

Torbole is likely to give you a little more time, but it is at least a half hour drive off the Autostrada over the mountain to Torbole and back, giving you a couple of hours there.

Sam - we are picking our car up at the airport in Venice. Have you driven from Venice to Torbole? I have not been to this part of Italy. According to Google Maps Torbole about 15 min off the freeway (roughly 14 km.) Is it a nice place to spend a leisurely couple of hours?

No, but I rode over it in a bus in February. Maybe that is why it took a half hour. OK, maybe it was just 20 minutes, but unless you know the road, and don't get behind a bus, half an hour is a good budget. There is a toll booth to deal with at the Autostrada entrance/exit as well.
Very pretty area.

Jtraveler - LOL! We were going to visit Trento as I have an old friend who lives there! But she will be back in the states on vacation while we are in Italy. We really just want a place to stretch our legs, eat some lunch and see (another) beautiful view as we make our way from Venice to Bolzano. It sounds like Torbole will fit the bill. Thanks for the input!
