Verona or Not?

We will be in Fussen, Germany and then heading to Venice. We have a couple of days to spare in between. Any opinions on whether we should go through Salzburg (to Eagle's Nest) and then to Venice or take the route through Innsbrook and spend a couple of days in Verona? We're looking at being there around July 12.

Went to Verona in a terrible rain storm. We enjoyed the coloseum, and didn't get to see "juliet's balcony".

Verona was "OK", I think it can missed.

That being said, been to Salzburg, and it's a delightful city, and drove past the Eagles Nest...I think that would be a interesting bit of history to see.

Salzburg has the Sound of Music tour, the very pretty gardens, the castle, and if you are lucky, you might attend a concert. How about a tour of the salt mines? that was fun (did that way back in 1976!)

you will get many votes, mine is for Salzburg and Eagles Nest. If you miss Verona, you really won't miss much. Venice holds much more in the way of sites to see.

Hi Coni,

I would recommend going to Salzburg. That is one of my favorite cities in all of Europe. The town has so much character. I did the Sound of Music tour when I was there, and even if it is a bit cheezy it was really great to see more of the country side and see places where the movie was filmed.

I have also been to Innsbruck and was only there for 1 day. It was rainy when we were there so didn't spend a lot of time. But it seemed there wasn't as much to do there.

I haven't been to Verona. I've heard good things about it. But if I were to choose between Verona and Salzburg I would choose Salzburg.

Have a great trip!

I've been to all and would choose Salzburg over Innsbrook and Verona.

This is from someone who LOVES Verona. I would choose Salzburg and the Eagle's Nest over Verona in the summer time. Really nothing in Verona can beat standing on the top of a mountain and seeing for miles and miles. There is also a fun/campy salt mine tour in Berchtesgaden. Frommer's guide book has excellent information for that area. Rick's isn't as detailed, but that is just because he focuses on cultural sites not so much on things that Europeans like to see and do on vacation.

We really liked Verona. We skipped all the Romeo and Juliet stuff (because it's fiction) but found the medieval center and Roman ampitheater worth seeing. The Opera was put away before we got there, seeing an opera in the Roman ampitheater would be a highlight.

We stayed at Villa Franchescetti hostel. It's pretty run down but cheap and the staff was friendly. Overall, it's not a place I would recommend.

I have not been to Salzburg, so I can't compare (sounds wonderful), but one of my favorite and unexpected things I did in a trip to Italy was go to Verona and see an Opera. You will be there during the Opera festival so while I don't think it may merit spending a number of days if you can spare a few hours, the Opera can be worth it.

It is outdoors in the Arena, which is beautiful, and as night falls folks in the know all light candles so it looks like a starry sky. The sets and the music are also wonderful. We saw Turandot. Please note I am not very knowledgeable about Opera, and for the most part not that interested, but this experience really has stuck with me as amazing. (I have only seen one other Opera, La Boheme in an attempt to get some culture and actually didn't enjoy it all)

Here's a link in case you are interested.
