Verona Opera (Arena)

Setting plans into motion for travel in Summer 2012. Thinking Florence, CT (Villages) and Verona for the Opera Festival. Is one Opera suggested over the others? (We are familiar with 2012 season Operas) Is one month better for this plan than another?
We are music & art teachers - any suggestions are very helpful in planning our week.

Can't say as I'm one for opera but have thought that if I could catch Romeo & Juliet in the arena it would be an experience.

We saw Aida there last summer and it was incredible. That would be my suggestion. The setting is perfect for this opera, and the production is magnificent. We were there on opening night for the season, in mid June. There was a rain delay, but the audience was cheerful and patient. The roar when the orchestra cammout to tune up, indicating the show would go on, was amazing. The whole thing was a lot of fun.

They're most famous for their productions of Aida, since Verdi was a resident of Verona.

It would be a good idea to stay overnight in Verona proper (not on the outskirts) on the night of the opera, especially if there is a rain delay to avoid any problems getting out of the city in the wee hours of the morning. I saw Nabucco and Aida this past July, both ended around 2:00 a.m. due to rain delays. I enjoyed Aida more, mostly because the set and costumes were more vivid and elaborate. And of course, who can resist the March complete with horses! Book your hotel far in advance!

Aida would be my recommendation but I think any opera that can benefit from Verona's "larger than life" venue would be a great choice.
