larabram, I enjoyed the very comfortable Arte nel Centro B & B in Verona, which is located on an avenue, about half way between the train station and the old city piazzas and sites, an easy walk in either direction, especially nice if you will be taking days trips by train or bus. Check out their web site and reviews on booking.com etc. for sites, when I was there, you could buy a pass that included entry to most sites, for 24 or 48 hours as I remember. Beyond the famous Arena, there are various museums, churches and a tower, and two famous piazzas. Also Juliet’s House and Balcony, perhaps the original fake news. Many places to eat. You might like to try the horse meat and the donkey meat, delicacies in the Verona area. For me, these were once in a lifetime experiences.

Isn't there a section in the RS Italy guidebook on Verona? Or has it gone the way of Ravenna?

Michael, the chapter is still there, 22 pages in the big RS Italy but much abbreviated in Best of Italy. Here on the web site, the search field above will just turn up snippets, such as video clips on Rick's blog.

Hotel Torcolo is about as central a location as one could want. It is possible to walk there from the train station, but with luggage a taxi is much better and not that expensive -- probably ten Euros or so. A bus may be available also . Google them to get to their website and see what your think. We contacted them directly by email and heard back in less than 24 hours. Breakfast there is, in my opinion, not worth the cost -- much better to get somethin at one of the local coffee shops. Verona is small enough that you can walk everywhere. The old Roman Theater is really neat as is people watching at Piazza Erbe. The old Roman Theater is good as is the castle and museum. You can get good food most anywhere -- never had a bad meal there.

We lived in Verona last year for the last 2 weeks of February. We rented an Airbnb just outside the old town. Every early evening the locals go for a stroll around the old town; weaving their way through the alley's to the large piazza where the coliseum is. We very much enjoyed this every night and then we would purchase our fresh pasta and wine for our evening dinner at home. We loved Verona, the people, the pace of life and the food! So much to see just wandering around, climbing up to the highest hill for a breathtaking vista of the city, walks along the river.
We took a few day trips out to the lake to visit a spa. We also drove to Venice for lunch one day during carnival as I really wanted to see the costumes. Crazy, but fun.
Driving in Italy is always a challenge. Just go with the flow.

We stayed at La Finestra sull'Arena a few years ago and loved it. It was literally close enough to the arena that we went there during intermission to use the bathroom and were back in oodles of time. It's in the pedestrian zone, so no car traffic noise to worry about. The humorous part for us was listening to the people walking and talking or sitting and drinking/eating AFTER the opera at 1:00 am when we were more than ready for bed. That made it feel very safe and comfortable though - the buzz of happy people filling the street. It quieted down fairly quickly. March is before opera season of course, but it is still a great location to be. We walked all over, on both sides of the river. We would definitely stay there again.

One of my favourite pictures from that trip is a night shot of me and my two daughters on one balcony, taken by my husband from the other balcony. It was post-opera and we were all dressed up and glowing from the wonderful evening.

I always stay at Hotel Aurora on piazza erbe when I go to Verona. Love the location, rooms are small but clean. They have a wonderful breakfast that is included in room cost. The bus and taxi stop are in front of the hotel. Ask for a room with a view onto the piazza.
