Verona - Day trip from Venice or en route to lakes? And, Car Rental store near train station?

We will be in Venice next year for 5-6 days and will visit one of the lakes (Garda or Maggiore) after Venice. I would like to incorporate a day in Verona and I'm wondering if we should visit Verona as a day trip from Venice or en route to one of the lakes. If we visit Verona en route to one of the lakes, my question is whether the car rental stores are close to the train station because I will be picking up a car and would like to take the train from Venice to Verona, leave my luggage at either the train station or car rental company, sightsee for half a day or so & then pick up my car at the end of the day and drive to Maggiore or Garda. It seems that if we visit Verona as a day trip from Venice it would be a bit more cumbersome but maybe it's really easy. What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance for your assistance in answering my questions.

Verona is a lovely town that you could easily enjoy for a day. If you would rather not hassle with car rental/pick up & drop off times, there's easy train connections between Verona and Stresa, so you could just take trains from Venice to your lake destination. If you choose Stresa, be sure to take the local ferry to Isola Bella (gorgeous!) and Isola Pescatori.

Yes, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and maybe others, all have offices within a couple of blocks of Verona Porta Nuova train station. The station has bag storage, as well. If you're booking a car rental online, "train station" is usually a location description that you can choose, but then confirm the location on a map.

I will be in Lake Garda for 3 days mid October. I will report back on our experience. We are also starting our travels in Venice. 12 more days, getting excited!
