We have been planning 2 nights in Venice and 2 nights in Verona. I have found an apartment in Verona for 50 euro per night less than the place we have reserved in Venice. We are on a pretty tight budget and 100 euro is a big difference. Also, staying 4 nights in Verona would mean less moving around. So the question is - should we save money and day trip into Venice or stay in Venice and spend the extra money?
you can look up the times & prices on the Trenitalia site. When I looked, it was a bit over an hour each way and cost about 6E. There's plenty of trains running (at least in the morning times I checked), so think about the time/cost tradeoff. Figuring on 20 minutes to walk from Verona to the train station, thats 3 total hours travel time each of the 2 days, and 24E in tickets (2 people, there and back). So are you willing to give up 3 hours per day spent riding trains to/from Venice to save (50-24) = 26E?
Keep in mind that if you daytrip from Verona you'll be out the whole day. If you stay in Venice you can pop back into your hotel to change, take a break, etc.
If you're interested in Venice then stay in Venice.
Mike, you have a point about the time and train cost involved. Steve, the place you recommended is where we have a reservation. I guess we should just leave things alone and I can rent a place in Verona for 2 nights.
While it wouldn't be difficult to day trip into Venice from Verona, you'll probably like Venice a lot less if you only visit during the day when it's crowded. Early morning and evenings in Venice are fantastic, as the day trippers haven't yet arrived or have left, and you can experience its true charm. I'd try to save the 100 euro by some other means. One option would be to take an IC or regional train from Venice to Verona rather than an ES. That won't save you the entire 100 euro, but it's a start.
Andrea - Steve's suggestion is a good one and fairly priced - great location near Rialto Bridge and Market. Please do not miss Venice!! At night the city changes and whether it's the "Battle of the Bands" in Piazza San Marco, where each Cafe plays for your attention or simply walking down the Riva degli Schiavoni - the section of vendors and cafes just outside of the Piazza San Marco, you should see the nightlife in addition to the daytime.
Ciao, Greg
I stayed in Venice for two nights and it was absolutely magical. I met a new friend who was also traveling alone and we walked from San Marco all the way to the train station at night and it was so much fun getting lost by just following the arrows. We had dinner outside and gelatos afterward. Venice is divine at night. It is worth the experience.
