Verona as a home base

Based on what I see online, Verona looks like it would be a good home-base city for exploring the area by train (Venice, Modena, Parma, Bolzano etc)

Anyone out there who has done this too? Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's a wonderful home base. It's a city in its own right, not wholly dependent on tourism like some places such as Venice. You might want to find a place within walking distance of the train station, at the southern end of the historic center.

I didn't use Verona as a home base, but I wanted to say that both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the city when we stayed there. We bought a Verona Card at the train station that covered both many attractions and public transportation. I know we saw things we were didn't know about prior to getting the card. It was well worth it.

Use Rome2Rio.com as a quick way to figure out how long it takes to get from Verona to those destinations. Don't forget Padova and Vicenza as very easy daytrips from Verona. Also, Lake Garda, depending on the time of year.

I've stayed in Verona every summer for the last 4 years. I originally went because I love opera and wanted to see performances at the Arena. I now go because I love the city itself and the surrounding area.

I would suggest that rather than staying near the railway station, stay in the heart of the old town. I say that because you will get a much greater 'feel' for the place; and also because the area around the station is OK but nothing special. The old town really is special. And you'll be in the heart of it every evening, so it's really interesting.

It's easy to get to the station by bus (10 minutes max and buses are frequent). I've visited Padua, Vicenza, Mantua all by train. And also Lake Garda.

If you would like the contact for the apartment where I stay, let me know. It's in an old palace that the owner is gently renovating.

Simone,
Love Verona as a home base. Agree that staying in the heart of the city is best. I stay on Piazza del Erbe when I am there. The bus stops in the piazza several times a day and is a convienent way to get to close by towns or to take you to the train station to catch a train. There are many things to see in Verona and it is a great walking city.
