In Verona this May I stayed at Hotel Siena via G. Marconi, not in center and a good walk, closer to Porta Nuova train station. Single economy room rate was less than new comfortable room. Impressed by friendly front desk crew who helped me purchase tix to Scrovegni chapel Padova, even invited me to a free concert at San Zeno Maggiore church. You will love both places. Cheers, Peter

We stayed at Albergo Milano in Varenna in September and highly recommend it. Great views, very good breakfast and the best place we stayed in our 3 week trip.
