Hi,
I'm going to Verona in a couple of days. Does anyone have any suggestions for good restaurants and sights to see?
Thanks!
LOTS to see. Check TripAdvisor. I spent 4 weeks there in February. I enjoyed the Castle, walking the pedestrian way (Via Mazzini?), the Scaliger Tombs, there was a great art exhibit at the museum next to the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe is nice to just walk through. I cooked in my apartment so no help there. Great running along the river- lots of mileage possible. Have fun. Lots to see.
Castelvecchio Museum, takes you inside and outside the castle; San Zeno cathedral; Piazza Bra; walk along the river and look for rowers practicing.
Unfortunately for us, one of our two days in Verona (in 2014) was a Monday, when most of the museums and the castle were closed, and we went to Lake Garda on Tuesday. With that said, Verona is a great place just to "be" and we very much enjoyed walking around. Our favorite restaurant in Verona, and one of the top choices of our trip, was La Taverna di Via Stella. Even though it is very close to Juliet's house, most of the customers did not appear to be tourists, and the menu did not cater to tourists. I checked this morning on TripAdvisor and the recent reviews are consistent with my experience. The worst meal of our trip was at one of the touristy places with outdoor seating on one of the major squares. We knew better, but we were starving and exhausted and paid the price - literally and figuratively!
Check out the old Roman Theater on the other side of the river. If memory serves there is also a museum attached to it. And the coliseum is a must see. Piazza Bra is a great place to have a coffee or drink and engage in a little people watching. With regard to restaurants, anyplace the locals patronize. Never had a bad meal there.
Janets,
I don't know if you realize it or not, but you posted this thread as a duplicate.
You may ask the Webmaster if (s)he can combine the replies into one ;-)
Google "Verona Card" for a list of the sights. I shlepped out to the Roman theatre and thought it was wasted time - it's small and not interesting. On the other hand, the Arena in the center of town is a must-see, especially lovely in the late afternoon sunlight. Do go out for the passeggiata in the evening.
Sadly, I agree with Chani about the theatre, sadly because I live Roman ruins.
In May I dined at Ristorante Greppia, located at Vicolo Samaritana, 3 - 37121. It was very good.
I also recommend the Verona Card. The TI leads a walking tour through the city that was interesting and only 10€.
Don't waste your time on the Roman theater. We were there in Aug of this year and it was all covered up with modern day seating and you could only see small remnants of the original theater. It was a waste of time.
Guess we were there at the right time to see the Roman Theater at it's best. Oh well, the vagaries of timing.
I celebrated my 70th birthday at the Vecio Macello Ristorante. It was a fantastic seafood feast. Staff very friendly and helpful. I can recommend it highly. Rated highly by TripAdvisor
We really liked Taverna di Via Stella in the historic center.
I had a great lunch at L'Orilogio at Corso Porta Nuova 7 on Tuesday. It's just outside Piazza Bra and it was filled with locals. The menu does not have the usual dishes found at most restaurants. My antipasto was a warm octopus salad with potatoes, tomatoes and black olives. For pasta I chose home made Tortellini with butter and sage made in the commune of Valeggio sul Mincio. These had to be the two of the most interesting and satisfying dishes in my three weeks in Italy. The menu has many choices and they had a selection of 24 different wines available by the glass at very reasonable prices.
If you follow the walking tour in the Rick Steves Guide, you'll see the wonders the town has to offer. If you're day tripping here, buy two bus tickets for each person at the Tabacchi inside the the RR station - one to get to Piazza Bra and one to get back to the rail station. The bus to Piazza Bra, contrary to the Guide, stops at platform B1, not A. If you conclude the walking tour and don't want to walk back to Piazza Bra, go back to the bridge, cross the river, turn left and walk about 50 yards to the bus stop. Bus #73 will take you back to the station.
