Please look at the map. Pisa is one direction from Vernazza. Nice is the opposite direction. If you don't have a car, the only other option is the train.
Check Trenitalia.com for schedules.

If you are traveling from Venice, Florence or Rome, hit Pisa on your way TO the Cinque Terre. It will save you a bunch of time.

Ruth, As the others have mentioned, travel by train is the "best mode of transportation". However, also as pointed out that WILL indeed be a long day, and I'm not sure that travel to Pisa is a good idea on the way to Nice. The travel time could in fact be longer than described in the previous reply. That will depend to some extent on which train you choose. Happy travels!

A few years ago I took a train ride from Monterosso to Nice. I left Monterosso early, maybe 7 am, and changed trains in Genova (Genoa) and Ventigmiglia. About noon, I arrived in Nice. From Vernazza, the connection may not be so direct since fewer trains to the north stop in that town; it may be necessary to begin with the local train either to Monterosso or La Spezia. If you really want to visit Pisa the day of travel, take the train to Pisa and find a flight from Pisa to Nice. You can park your luggage at the train station and visit the tower.

To look at train schedules, use http://www.trenitalia.com (click on British flag on top right for English). But be aware that much of your route will be on regional trains, which are only posted 7 days in advance. So, choose a date within the next week, that is the same day of the week as you intend to travel. Otherwise, you will not see most of the possibilities. To look for flights, use http://www.skyscanner.com
