Vernazza to Murren

We are spending a few days in Vernazza and then traveling to Murren. We plan on taking 2 days to get there by train. Can't decide on the best itinerary for the two days. One plan is to go to Chamonix, spend the night and then to Murren the next day. Another is to go to Lake Como then to Murren the next day. Any ideas?

My advice is to get to Muerren as quickly as possible because there's no place that I've ever seen that even comes close to the eye-popping scenery in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and especially in Muerren.

Hi Sue, Haven't been to Chamonix but Lake Como is wonderful. But I have to agree with Tim that even though we loved Lake Como, it can't compare with Murren. That whole area is one of the most beautiful areas we have ever seen. Go directly to Murren and spend your whole time there.

I just did the same exact trip and it only took 5 hours to get from La Spezia to Interlaken Ost. Then it's just a short train, then gondola, then train ride to Murren.

I spent 4 nights in Gimmelwald (a short gondola ride away from Murren) and wished for more.

I've been to Murren twice before and can't wait to get back! We're spending 4 nights there already. Was hoping to make a stop somewhere along the way for one night. Sounds like you're recommending just going straight there. Thanks for your replies.

OK Sue, now I see where you're coming from. My vote would be for Lake Como....beautiful area and it's fun to take the ferry to the little towns along the lake. Overnight in Varenna and stay at Hotel Olivedo (try to get room overlooking lake).

Hi Sue, We have a similar itenerary. We will be in Murren then travel by train to Riomaggiore. We are leaving Murren around 8:30 in the morning traveling to Milan then catching a train directly to CT. Why are you taking 2 days to make the trip? Maybe you can't go the otherway in a day? It was easy for us to find that route on the train sights. This is our first trip as a family, (I have not been in 20 years) so it's all new to us, but we think our one day travel plan will work. It's about 7-8 hours total. Good luck!

We did this a couple of years ago. We had a really great overnight stop in Como - walked around a bit, had a nice dinner, and the hotel was also very nice -near the old town wall. We then continued by train and decided to take a scenic leg that wasn't all that scenic (you couldn't see past the trees) and was very, very slow. If there's a faster train, I'd suggest taking it to Murren. You'll want to maximize your time in Murren, especially if you want to increase your chances of a sunny day for mountain top views!
