Can anyone guide me on how to get from our lodging (LaMala) to Hotel Tiber on a Sunday (29 April). I'm not familiar with (and admit to being a bit intimidated by) the trains. Are there direct trains? Will we take a very early morning regionale (CT) train to LaSpezia and then connect to a fast train that will take us directly to the airport area?

No direct trains, you'll have to make at least 2 train changes. The schedule for April is not finalized yet, but looking at the current schedule, you take a regional train to La Spezia at 9:33, change there to an IC train to Rome Ostiense station, then change to a regional train to FCO, arriving at 3:18 pm. If the Hotel Tiber has shuttle service, call them and take it to the hotel, otherwise a taxi.
You can wait until after December 10 when the schedule is finalized and buy advance nonrefundable tickets at http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en.
Hotel Tiber says it also provides shuttle service to the cruise port in Civitavecchia, so you might inquire whether they could pick you up a the train station in Civitavecchia where both the Intercity and Freccia trains stop. There might be a cost for the shuttle, but it would help simplify and possibly shorten your trip (i.e. local train to La Spezia, direct train to Civitavecchia, shuttle to hotel).
