My husband and I are planning a trip in Sept. (2nd week) and are trying to decide on a place to stay for 4 nights. We are trying to keep the cost to 60-80 euros a night. We are trying to decide between Albergo Barbara, Franca Maria or Gianni Franzi. Albergo Barbara won't guarantee a room with a window/view unless if you get the 100 Euro room. Is Albergo Barbara worth it if you don't have a view and are in the Attic? Does anyone have a recommendation on specific rooms at Franca Maria or Gianni Franzi. Or does anyone have any other recommendation? We were in Cinque Terre 8 years ago and stayed in Monterossa at Albergo Pasquale and loved our room--however it is over our budget for this trip. We would love a little balcony & view! Thanks.
For me a view is overrated.I only sleep in my room and the rest of the day am on the go.A room with a view is great but not if I have to pay extra for it.
I recommend renting a room for Martina Callo. http://www.roomartina.com/ My husband and I stayed in room #3 which had a balcony overlooking the harbor. Vernazza was our "mini vacation" during our 3 weeks traveling around Italy and we spent every evening on the balcony drinking wine just relaxing. Martina makes his own wine with local grapes and will sell you a bottle for about 3 euro. The cost is comparable to your budget. There is also good reviews on Trip Advisor! Enjoy!
I would try for a room with a view, if possible. We stayed at Albergo Barbara, and would try something else the next time we were there. I would say the Cinque Terre is one of the places I'd try a little harder for a view.
We stayed at Franco Maria several years ago and our room did not have a view. It was very quiet, nice large bed, ensuite bathroom, and easy to get there from the train station. It was definitely within your budget.
we stayed at maria capellini rooms cozy studio apt. in vernazza, right on the sqaure. no view but clean and 80 euros per night. would stay here again for sure. good luck :):)
We have 4 nights reserved in room #2 at Franca Maria Rooms. You can go to their website (francomaria.com) and look at each room and see the "views." Ours overlooks the end of the piazza area and some of the little harbour there. Good price too - I think 85 euro. There's one - can't remember name of it - that has a lot of rooms right by that "tower" and some of the views look awesome from the pics. There is a patio area right on the far ocean side. LOTS of stairs tho'.
I am staying at Franca Maria for my third time. I have stayed in both room #1 and #2. The view is great and there are few stairs. A major plus in Cinque Terre!!
Thank you everyone who has responded to our post. We are still trying to decided. Unfortunately Room #3 recommended at Martina Callo is not available. They have room 2, but we really want access to a patio or balcony.
Has anyone stayed at Camere Giuliano's? Thanks so much.
Hi Stan and Janet,
If you can wait until the end of April I'll be able to tell you about the attic room in the Albergo Barbara -- I'll be staying in it on April 16 & 17. After April 23, if you still need that information, let me know and I'll be happy to share what I learn with you. Dick
Stay in Franca Maria room #1. It has a fantastic view and is quite large. You will not have to go up many steps to get to the room. I have heard that there are many flights of steps to the attic of Albergo Barbara.
I tried for 2 months sending emails to Albergo Barbara and never heard back. I went to their website to check availability of a room I never heard back but was charged for the room anyway. Since I did not get a confirmation from them I didn't think they were open in March. Was surprised to find a charge for a room on my credit card statement and Albergo Barbara refused to remove the charges.
We stayed at Albergo Barbara on the 15 & 16 of April. We had a back attic room and loved it. It was hard to climb the stairs, especially after a whole day of hiking, but the room was charming and quiet, small but very clean and only shared the bathroom with one other room. Only E50 at that time. Would recommend it, no problem.
We're staying at Camere Giuliano in a couple weeks. We won't be back until 5/19 but can post then. So far they've been really friendly and nice - his wife Michele is American, so there's no language issues. They might book up fast though... we booked 4 months out and they only had their most expensive room left... the private cottage, which was a bit of a bonus for us. If you look at Trip Advisor, there are a lot of photos of the view from there. Keep in mind, it is set back in the hillside, so you have a view across the town and to the water. Though I think that's a lovely view. :)
Thanks so much for all of your responses/recommendations. As it turns out, we ended up making a reservation at Gianni Franzi. We had a heck of a time getting a reservation as most places we were interested in were booked or not what we are looking for.
Gianni Franzi did not specify which room we are getting but said that it is a double room/private bath with a terrace at the top of the hotel for 100 Euros/less 10% for cash. Thanks again!
Hi Stan and Janet,
I stayed at Gianni Franzi last September and really loved it. I just wanted to add after reading your last post, that each level of the hotel had a little private terrace area with seating and an immaculate view - perfect for hanging out on and enjoying some wine while staring at the water. The views from that hotel are insane. Have a wonderful trip!
