Vernazza lodging question

My sister and I reserved an apartment in Vernazza for June. We emailed the owner of the apartment to make sure the apartment would still be available. He replied back that the room was available and that he would leave the key in the door with our names written on the door. Is this safe? Is this just a small town quirk or should I be worried? We are three twenty two year old girls and I am concerned about safety. Am I overreacting?

Virginia, Things tend to be a bit "informal" at times in the Cinque Terre, and especially Vernazza (booking a Hotel in Monterosso is somewhat more "business like"). IMHO, this is absolutely "safe". When you arrive there, you'll probably find that the arrangement seems quite "normal". If you plan on hiking the trail to Monterosso, be sure to take lots of water! Enjoy your stay in the Cinque Terre!

Ken is right. This is a very small town where trust runs high. Presumably the owner will stop by to do the mandatory paperwork and collect the rent. Of course once in your apartment, take normal precautions and lock up. I am so anxious to return to Vernazza and see the progress since the floods. Enjoy!
