Vernazza, April 25. A bad day to be in Cinque Terre?

I believe I was reading Steve's 2010 Italy book when he made note of a holiday on April 25th. Not sure if it was localized to Cinque Terre, but he warned that everything, including the hiking trails (why???) would be closed as everyone celebrated. Of course I did not read that section before I made our plans.

So... What to do on that day of enforced leisure? If the trains are running, I thought of Santa Margherita and Portofino day trip with a hike to the monastery. Any other ideas? Is the 25th the holiday? What might I expect in terms of restrictions?

Peter, April 25th, Liberation Day is celebrated throughout Italy. It is in part a day to honour the partizans who fought against the fascists in WWII. I've been in Rome on that day and hardly noticed, except for a big official celebration at the Victor Emmanuel monument. The trains will still be running (possibly on a reduced schedule?) However, I understand Liberation Day is a much bigger deal in smaller towns like the CT. I can't say for sure, but it sounds like it could be a good opportunity to party with the locals, and since they credit the Allies with helping to defeat the fascists it might be a good time to be an American in Italy.
