I'll be in Tuscany 22 days, with a rental and know I'll be needing GPS as well an other internet service. I'm considering using the $100/30days plan rather than $12/ 24 hr. day I used last time in Europe and fund it cumbersome turning it on and off and ended up using it every day. So as an option, Can someone who used this flat rate $100 plan share how well it worked out? Thanks.
The $100.00 Verizon plan is the way to go. I'm on the cheep side and now consider it just part of travel. Otherwise constantly worrying about turning it on and off. I will however warn you that yes your sign up for 30 specific days, but I've had to call and remind them to take it off my bill upon returning home when I noticed they had not.
I use it often and am using it right now in Spain. Just make sure to cancel when you get home
I always use the Verizon monthly plan and it’s great. My phone works just as it does at home. Unless you check the auto renew box when you sign up there is nothing to cancel. It expires after your 30 days. You pick the start date. I always have it start a day or two early so I can make sure I get the text message saying it started.
I think I am the exception and that it works for most, however I had problems near the end of a 3 week trip with the data usage limit of 20GB for the month. Now, my husband used the monthly plan with no problems, and never reached the limit, so everyone's mileage will vary. But once I hit the 20GB on my phone, it was so slow as to essentially be a brick.
I also download Google maps of the areas I’ll be in, for offline use, just in case I’m someplace where there is no cell service.
It’s much cheaper and easier to just upgrade your plan to Unlimited Ultimate for the time you need the international access. Verizon allows you to to easily upgrade for a specific period of time (they’ll even allow you to enter a start and end date), and this way you’re only paying at most $25 for a month (which is the difference between Welcome 30 and the Unlimited Ultimate at $55). We do this whenever we travel internationally.
What fraubarr said. Unlimited Ultimate (or whatever it might be called now - Verizon changes their plan names all the time!) covers international calls and data as part of the plan, and when I upgraded, it was just $12 more a month than what I was paying. Included higher data for the hotspot feature, as well as a higher data allowance internationally. We do several trips each year, so I just kept the plan active instead of trying to go back to a cheaper one (and if that is what you want to do - make sure that you can. Sometimes they will not allow you to "revert" especially if you are on an older plan).
Unlimited Ultimate.
It will be $25 more a month.
you can do it from the app. Just remember when you get home to switch back to your "regular" plan whatever that is.
My son (who is on my plan) just did it for a few weeks, then clicked back to his old plan when he got home. Since I am not too trustful of phone companies, I hope they don't keep charging us for the Ultimate Plan. But it seemed easy to do.
If your mobile phone supports a double SIM could be a good idea even purchase an Italian one once arrived. There are Italian companies who offer 30 days 200Gb of traffic at about 15/25€ and for a foreign tourist could be a cheaper solution.
I don't know the specifics of that plan but I'll share a potential "Gotcha" that impacts a similar plan on AT&T:
The 10 day limit isn't 30 days...It's per billing cycle. So if your billing cycle ends during your overseas trip, you will start be charged the daily rate to a max of 10 days in either or potentially both of those billing cycles.
You can preemptively fix this by changing your billing cycle end date for your account. You can only do that once per ____ (year maybe??)
I used the Verizon monthly international plan for a trip to Ireland in September. It was supposed to be $100 and after i signed up, I received a bonus on two lines, so it really was only $80 each. (I didn't ask for it, it was just added on) The plan was for a month, so it starts on the day you want it activated. It was not as I feared, overlapping 2 billing cycles. I signed up for it to begin the day before my trip. You must remember to get it for just one month, not recurring months.
It was so simple, that was all we had to do. No further set up. It worked flawlessly. It was good for google maps. My husband and I decided after we will not mess with day passes or sim cards ever again. Even the day pass as you mentioned requires a lot of thought, planning, making sure you are not connecting to a tower. You are spending a lot of money to travel, this was not really expensive considering. And not having to worry about anything else and have your phone work as it does at home was so worth it.
Back story: 4 adults traveling all on the same Verizon plan. I was the lead traveler, with all the reservations etc. I researched so much and really wasted so much time doing so. I decided since I was the lead traveler I would get the plan and get E sims for the other 3 travelers. One was Aerlo and the other 2 Holafly. Again the night before the trip, wasted time trying to activate it.. Verizon was not playing well with our Sims. I got 2 to work, the next day, at the airport, working with tech support to activate the other one. As we were close to boarding, I just signed that person up for the Verizon International plan. When we landed, we just turned on our phones. It was working. So the two of us who had it had no issues with taxi apps, navigation, reservations etc, where as the others did. I know your question was about daily plans and not esim. But Verizon monthly was just so easy.
Just make sure to cancel when you get home. They promise that you do not have to do that but trust me, I've had two long-drawn out disputes with Verizon when they did not automatically cancel the monthly plan, even though I had other signed up for a recurring plan.
As I mentioned, I use it several months a year and it works beautifully for me..
