Venice, which boat?

RS suggests a boat(vaporetto or alilunga) to take along the Grand Canal to see the many districts, can someone tell me which one it is? I think it also was a reasonable fare. I am not sure if one can get on or off along the way though. Thank You.

Yes, its the No 1 Vaporetto. It makes all the stops. If you want to get on and off, you need to buy a day pass, otherwise its 7 Euro every time you get on again. Get the RS audio tour on this website and load in on to an MP3 player, and you get RS own voice pointing out the sights along the way. Note, RS says get a front seat outside, those boats are no longer used on the No 1 Line (as far as I have seen) so get a good seat and board the boat at Piazzale Roma so you will be the first one on board and can pick your seat. If you try to get on the boat at the train station its likely to be standing room only.

Sammaee, if you'll be in Venice for several days, I suggest the Vaporetto Pass (you can get it for one day as well). You can buy it at the train station and begin using it right away, You need to scan it at every vaporetto stop. Otherwise, as Sam said, each time you board you'll need a full-fare ticket, and they add up. Line #1 is the line you want, and I have seen boats with outside seating on various lines (perhaps they are fill-ins at peak traffic times).

At least in May, they used boats with front seats on the No. 2 line which is the express.

To add to the other (correct and excellent) responses, the Alilaguna is the express boat that goes from the airport to the city (and some other places). It is more expensive than the regular varporetti, is not covered by the vaporetto pass, and is not useful for getting around Venice itself.
