Venice - Where to Stay

Hello all --

I will be in Venice with my mom (she's 55 and I'm 35) in late September and I am trying to figure out accommodations. I know San Marco is the touristy area which is fine with us. However, I am looking at the Hotel Ai Cavileri Venezia and it looks fantastic but hotels.com states is located in Castello. Can anyone offer any input on if that will be an area that would work out fine for us? We will only be in Venice for 3 nights and will want to do the "touristy" things just because it is our first time visiting the city. So ease of getting to those locations from our hotel is important but everything looks pretty close together so I'm not sure if there is a huge difference between the two areas. Also, making sure we go off the beaten path is not a necessity for us on this trip - we would try to add that in if time permits!

Thanks for any input!

Castillo borders on San Marco, to the north.

Are you OK with walking? The hotel is close to Campo Santa Maria Formosa, which is a nice area, but not close to the vaporetto stops.

You can walk through the campo and then south to reach Piazza San Marco. From there you could take a vaporetto up the Grand Canal to reach other sites you might with to see, such as the Rialto Market, or the Accademia Bridge for museums and churches in Dorsoduro.

I would probably like that location a lot, but we love to walk all over Venice, and use the vaporetto as little as possible. .

Not sure what your budget is however, we stayed at Le isole which is in Castello. It was a five minute walk to St. Marks square. It was a wonderful hotel that had a delicious breakfast.

Locanda Orseolo is one of the favorites of people on the Fodor’s forum. It sounds great, but the traditional Venetian decor is not to our taste (we prefer modern/minimalist).

We stayed at Locanda Orseolo in October, as someone mentioned, recommended by another poster. It was more than we'd normally spend, breakfast included (which we don't normally care about - but they made homemade crepes!), and the service was impeccable. It was close to San Marco but in a private alley so not bad with the crowds.

On our RS trip we stayed here:

It is the perfect location in Venice , a couple streets/blocks? from St. Mark's Square. We were able to walk all over and saw so much. Small canal runs along the back of the hotel. We walked to the ferry dock and took a boats on to Burano, Murano, The Cemetery Island (sorry forgot the official name) We all loved this place.

Amber the location you are looking at is a good one.
We stayed at the Hotel Palazzo Vitturi also for 3 nights which is about a block away in the piazza Santa Maria Formosa

Was very easy to walk most everywhere from this location, kind of equi-distant to San Marco or to Rialto.
Reaching the Accademia area was a bit of a walk, but enjoyable especially in the early morning pre-group tours / cruise day trippers descending on the island.
No close Vaperretto stop but water taxis can access the area so if the cost does not scare you that is the very best way to get to the airport or train station.

Your immediate area is I suspect quiet at night but the piazza I mention is only a block away and stays quite lively.
The San Marco area all night stays fairly loud so I liked being close but not too close to it personally.

I found the walking the first day very confusing since not all roads go through, so many dead ends in Venice that are not marked. Best to use your phone's GPS ; I realized this the morning of the 2nd day and after that walking around was a breeze though obviously you look like an idiot tourist looking at your phone screen each minute to track your walking. I found it invaluable though and seriously not sure I would have walked the shortest route to anything without doing that in the Castello area.

Anyway if you love the hotel I would book it and I can endorse the general area.
