Try Pensione Guerrato which we love. Reasonable price, great staff, great location.

oops, I take it back. I just saw your price point. I can't think of anywhere I'd stay in Venice for €40 to €80 a night. Especially not for 2. I travel cheap but I can't meet that price.

Unfortunately, you aren't going to have many options left at this late date. September is still high season in Venice. Can you increase your budget? A more realistic budget would be at least $150 US a night. But even then, trying to find something this late will be a challenge. I suggest using booking.com or venere.com. They allow you to plug in your dates and look only at the places that are available then. Good luck.

We love Locanda Orseolo - great location just off St. Marks and right on a Gondola - lovely hosts - excellent breakfast, just a beautiful, historical, building. Have a great trip!

Venice is more expensive than most cities in Italy, but it's worth it. Can you define "nice but not too cheap" in dollars or euros? There are lots of options in a wide range of prices. Also, when are you going? That influences prices.

One other option in your price range would be a convent. Since my Venice lodging vanished last week, a few days ago I was searching MonasteryStays.com. They only had one convent available in late Sept; it was 68 E for one person, not sure about 2. Location wasn't too central, but was in Venice. I ended up booking something nearer to San Marco. But if you need to keep looking, you might want to check that website.
