We are staying at a hotel in venice between St. Marks and the Accedemia Bridge. The hotel is a couple steps from the Ponte delle Ostreghe and a minute walk from the water taxi stop there. If we are planning on taking a 8:30 AM train out of Venice, what time should we plan on leaving the hotel for the train station via the water taxi down the grand canal? 30 min, 45 min, 60 min prior? (I plan on purchasing my departure train ticket when we arrive in venice so we don't have to do that in the morning)
I think you mean that you are a couple of steps from the waterbus stop and not the water taxi stop. There is a large difference. The water taxi is a private boat that cost 90E-110E to ride. It's a true taxi with no scheduled stops. You hire it to go from point A to point B. The waterbus is the public vaporetto that makes scheduled stops along the Grand Canal and other locations. If the vaporetto stop to which you refer is on the St. Mark's side, look for a 25-minute ride to the Ferrovia stop (train station). If you are on the Rialto Bridge side, it's 15-minutes. Looking at the location for the Ponte delle Ostreghe, you are mid-way between St. Marks and the Rialto Bridge. Or, you can identify the name of the hotel and we can pin it down better.
Wanna bet on that traffic? When it gets busy, it will be more than you are expecting. If you are arriving by train, a request please. As you exit the train station, stand at the top of the stairs and just look for about a minute. It will be everything you expected but nothing you understand. Everything in the Grand Canal in front of you will be in motion. Crowds of people will be walking to and fro. For me, my world stopped as I just stood there and was amazed. Then, you go out and get into the middle of it.
Thanks Larry. Correct I meant the Water Bus vaperetto, not the private taxi. It's the Gio Gio B&B.
Thanks Robert. The B&B website indicates that you are near the S. Maria del Giglio vaporetto stop. According to the Venice public transportation website (www.actv.it), its a 31-minute journey on the Number #1 vaporetto from the Giglio stop to the Ferrovia stop (train station). Further, if you wanted to arrive at the train station at 8:00am, you would get on the scheduled Number #1 vaporetto at 07:20 and you will arrive at 7:51. The next vaporetto is at 7:40 which would put you at the train station at 8:11 which is close to your departure time. Arriving on the 7:51 vaporetto will give you time to walk to the train platform and to view the large schedule monitor to identify your train. Hopefully, you will have purchased your train tickets a day or two in advance. If not, you will need an earlier vaporetto as there are lines at the ticket windows and the ticket machines take a bit of time to learn and use.
Thanks Larry. I will check out that website. They usually run pretty much on time right? Not much traffic on the canal compared to buses in rome.
True poetry, Larry! I can't wait to experience that.
Are you departing on a weekday or weekend? When I was in Venice in September the waterbus had a different schedule on weekend mornings and didn't have the earlier departures. I did not know this in advance and ended up taking a water taxi.
Robert
On our last trip to Venice we had an 8.15 train departure. We took a 6.45 vaporetto to the station. It was the most memorable ride in all 3 times we have been there. Literally no one aboard and I sat up at the front with my camera just as the sun was beginning to shine on the buildings and with the waterboats delivering groceries with no other activity on the canal it was awesome. Give it a go at this time of day(if the weather is with you) You will not be sorry.
Thanks for the info Shelley. We have a weekday departure
