venice: water taxi info

We will be staying in the Dorsoduro section of Venice, and would like to catch an 8:37am train to leave Venice on a Monday morning in med September. What time do the water taxis start running, and approx how long will it take to get to the train station?

Thanks,
Donna

Donna, I suspect you mean the vaporetto when you say water taxi, not a true private water taxi, which are expensive.

The vaporetti start early, so don't worry. I usually give myself an hour + to get to the station no matter where I am staying. Ask your landlord/host/hotel what time and which vaporetto would be best. They usually have the schedules in their heads.

Thanks, Laurel.
Yes, I should have said vaporetti instead of water taxi. I did just notice that the train I was looking @ leaves from the Mestre station instead of the S.Lucia one. How much extra time should I allow for the shuttle to Mestre?

Thanks again!

You will need to be on the Regionale train 2704 departing Venezia Santa Lucia at 8:12 am to meet your 8:37 am train (which is coming from Trieste). Train 2704 has a final destination of Verona, so it should be the marking on the train. It takes 10 minutes to get to Mestre, so hop off there and proceed to the indicated platform for your connection. Since train 2704 is a regional train, you must validate your ticket in the machine before boarding or risk getting fined. I would suggest you buy the ticket at the station a day or 2 ahead of time so you won't waste any time waiting in line to purchase. Just stick it in your wallet and pull it out and validate it just before boarding.
Assuming the closest vaporetto dock is Accademia (it may be another on the Grand Canal, or it might be on the south side of the island. For now, I'll assume it is Accademia). The No 1 vaporetti runs every 12 minutes beginning around 6:00 am and it takes 33 minutes to get to the train station. So you need to be on the 7:13 am vaporetto to get you to the station by 7:46 am to get comfortably on the train.
The regular vaporetti start running at around 4:30 am on a 20 minute interval. and there are "N" boats that run all night on a 40 minute interval.

I have discovered to my tired arms' frustration that it is all stairs at Mestre, no lifts or escalators.

Depending on your destination, direct trains departing from Venezia S Lucia station might be more convenient than connecting at Mestre. Try your schedule search again to specify Venezia S Lucia station. How to Look Up Train Schedules Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.
