I have not purchased a vapparetto pass yet...leaving on the 7th of Oct.....a returning friend said she had so much trouble finding out how to purchase them at the train station that she and her husband just got on..planning to ask how to get the pass, but no one asked for the ticket.....the entire 3 days they were there.....
is it that hard to find the purchase office?
There are kiosks at the train station selling the pass. They are also sold at every vaporetto stop. Don't get me started on the ethics of free-riding.
I agree with you 100% that is why I wanted to know the best way to purchase
You can look for the Hellovenezia booth at the train station docks, or right outside the airport. Most of the docks have vending machines. Here is a nice tutorial on how to use them (as well as a great site for Venice information). http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/actv-ticket-machines.htm Your friends were lucky. Its a 50 euro or so fine on the spot if you're caught. Having said that, the only time I've seen tickets checked is in the long stretches where the crew isn't busy getting ready for the next stop on the Grand Canal, like going from San Marco to Lido or Giudecca.
As you come out of the station and look down the steps at the Grand Canal it has to be almost impossible to miss the very large Hellovenezia tent just off to the left - that's where I always go - and each of the vaporetto docks at Ferrovia has a sales booth too. They would have had to have been blind not to see them. Maybe they are - no offense meant. If nobody asked during their entire stay, they are very lucky. I'm afraid that their attitude says a lot about them. On each trip I usually get checked 2 or 3 times. Once at €50pp is even more than the pass then they still have to pay full price on top. I hope they don't have that attitude when they come to England. Our revenue protection officers will have them for lunch...
