Venice - unique accomodations

I've been thinking about going to Italy late December, Florence and Venice. I've looked at accommodations for Venice on booking.com and ones listed on this site and others. Found nice places, but nothing exactly appeals to me.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has stayed at a unique place that's inexpensive. I don't need fancy, just clean and comfortable.

A bit about me that might help. For example, I've traveled with my girls and stayed at lighthouses along the coast, Fort Mason in San Francisco, a cute B&B in Evora (Portugal) that produced their own jams and believed in sustainability.

I did do a bit of homework regarding staying at the monastery on San Giorgio Maggiore (donation based), but hit a dead-end on that one.

And unique can be as simple as staying at a place with really nice owners.

Yes, I did, thanks. One of the monasteries is on my maybe list, Instituto San Giuseppe.

We stayed at the Hotel Flora last summer and really loved it. I would consider it a unique stay. It’s near St Mark’s square, so the location is wonderful. However, it’s still tucked back off the main throughways - you feel like you’re back in your own oasis. There’s a lovely courtyard where we had breakfast every morning (I don’t know what your weather will be in December, but even if you eat in a breakfast room, it will be lovely). Breakfast was a treat each day - everything was fresh and served in lovely dishes. The hotel itself is a beautiful family run gem. Kind of that “elegant decay” that is Venice. Murano chandeliers in rooms, a mix of old and new furniture, etc… Everything is well maintained, but nothing is shiny - you know? We were a large multi family party (13 of us in total), and we had a variety of room types. Each unique from the others. I would go out of my way to stay there again. Truly a perfect Venetian experience. Have a wonderful trip! https://www.hotelflora.it/

Heather, the pictures look lovely. And they have a special for 25% off. Any recommendation on a particular room?

We had a room on Hotel Flora’s highest floor looking down on the interior garden where we enjoyed breakfast. You wouldn’t know you are so close to San Marco which I avoid staying near as it is tourist central. But Hotel Flora seemed far away, no problems at all.

Gail, I don’t remember our room number, but I do know we were in one of the “Comfort” category - overlooking the courtyard. It was great. Our kids (old teenagers) were in a “Classic” category room - just fine, but a little less charming than ours. My mother was in a “Superior” category room - truly lovely.

We loved San Giuseppi. Great location, English speaking front desk. My wife enjoyed speaking with one of the nuns from the Phillipines ( in Spanish )

When I researched some monasterystay.com options I found all required a substantial, non-refundable deposit of over 150 euros. Too risky for me.
