Venice > Tuscany > Fiumicino

Hello everyone! First of all, I have turned to these forums many times in the past 3 years as we have made trips to Europe...each time for a longer duration. So much helpful info and tips, so....thank you!

This time, we'll (wife and I) have 6 nights to spend in Italy. We'll fly from Munich to Venice and spend the first 2 nights there. That's where the uncertainty begins. We have only been to Rome (8 nights), Bonassola (3 nights) and Florence (2 nights) on past trips. We arrive in Venice early evening on 6/26 and will fly out of Rome on 7/2 at 11am.

I am looking look at taking a train from Venice, possibly to Verona first, and then to Pisa to pick up a rental car that we will retain until departing from Rome. Borrowing from Rick's tour itineraries and other online suggestions, I have a list of possible stops with the car:

Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, Siena, Orvieto

I have seen some suggest Pisa as a home base for 2-3 nights (4 total remaining after Venice). I have also considered spending the final night in Orvieto as that looks to be a nice midway point to Fiumicino.

We're 30 years old and will be going onto Dubrovnik and the Greek Isles after these 6 nights. Wine, scenery, and a relaxing ambience are probably our top 3 priorities for these days/nights in Italy. On the surface, my itinerary looks very plausible based upon my research (I hope!).

I am curious as to what I may be missing out on or what suggestions you may have in regard to having a home base (or to not have one) and what stops I am neglecting as well as what could serve as alternative overnight stays. For instance, would anyone suggest spending a single night in 4 of the above stops as opposed to driving back and forth? Travel time doesn't look to be a great hindrance in this case.

Finally, would you still suggest renting a car as the way to go? I am looking at a total of $110-150 for the rental (though I know other costs and fees will bump this up).

Thank you so much for your time!

First, you don't really need a car for the places you mentioned. I would choose Lucca over Pisa as a base. Siena would work, too.

If your flight is at 11am, would you turn in the car at FCO? The drive from Orvieto would depend on traffic, I would allow lots of time to turn in the car and get to your gate. Or, you could turn in the car in Orvieto, take the train to FCO (via change at Roma Termini), but The only weekday train leaves Orvieto at 5am. I prefer to stay in the departure city the night before.

Thanks, Zoe.

You would be confident in using trains/buses to get to the highlights of each town at a reasonable pace?

And yes, we would be dropping off the car at FCO. I am not finding an available pickup/drop-off rental for Pisa and Orvieto on Auto Europe.

for what its worth , we spent a few days driving and staying in the hill top towns last year, (thoroughly enjoyed it) having a car was great, but remember there are parking 'issues' eg: finding a close car parking space outside the town walls and 'generally' carrying your luggage into your hotel. we liked Cortona and San Gimignanio in preference to Volterra. (all were good) the best part was watching the day visitors leave the town and the locals then came out and the early mornings before the town gets full of tourists. the roads are narrow and can be slow to get around. while the main highways can be like a race track, especially when the trucks are on the roads. all part of travel.

My suggestions - forget the car, first. You won't be able to drive into the historic parts of the cities anyway. Trains are cheap and fast.

Pisa is usually a quick day trip for most people. I have stayed in Lucca, Siena, and Orvieto, each for 2-3 nights. Very relaxing, great food, and ambience. Volterra I have not been to yet.

I would advise against spending single nights in any place as you waste a lot of time travelling there, checking in and out of hotels, and don't get to spend as much time enjoying yourself. Since you only have 6 nights and arrive Venice late, stay at least 2 nights in Venice. Maybe leave on 28th for one city (Lucca, with trip to Pisa) and spend 2-3 nights, then leave on 30th for another city for 2-3 nights. Siena and Orvieto aren't too far apart, and Orvieto is close to Rome, but it is a little nerve wracking to try to get to Fiumicino in the morning without staying in Rome the night before. You could possibly get a later train into Rome, have a nice dinner, and have a relaxed trip to the airport the next day. Enjoy!

You have only 4 nights available, the last of which you need to be reasonably close to FCO. You don't say the airline you are flying home, but if the flight is operated by a U.S. based airline, your check-in and security procedures will be at the T5 Processing center after which you will be bussed (airside on the Tarmac side) back to the T3 from which you will take the people mover to the satellite boarding area G. Because of these additional procedures, I suggest you show up at T5 check in 2.5 hours prior to departure. That means you car rental return should be no later than 8am.

In you shoes, if you intend to visit Tuscany's villages and countryside I would rent a car in Venice at the Piazzale Roma rental office (all companies are in the City Parking structure. Then from there I would drive straight to a location between Florence and Siena, near Colle Val D'Elsa/Poggibonsi, along the freeway Siena-Florence. There are several hotels in former country villas or farmhouses in that area. Or you can stay in a hotel in one of the small towns in the area. That location is an excellent base to visit many famous towns and villages such as: San Gimignano, Volterra, Monteriggioni, Colle Val D'Elsa, Certaldo, Castellina in Chianti, Siena. All of the above are within 20-30 min drive from Colle. The Val'D'orcia (San Quirico, Pienza, Buonconvento, Montalcino, Montepulciano, etc.) are within one hour drive. You should spend 3 nights at this location of your choice in this area. After you are done, on the last day, you would drive to Orvieto and visit it for a few hours. Orvieto could be two hours from the airport during rush hour. Therefore I personally would stay closer to FCO. The town of Bracciano, on the homonymous lake, is close to the airport and a beautiful setting for your last romantic evening with your wife.

Pisa is not a good base. Nearby Lucca would be better, but both are a bit decentralized from the heart of Tuscany (Siena province). You also will never hear a Florentine like me recommending Pisa. We started war against each other over 800 years ago, and we still haven't made peace. But if you insist you can visit it from Colle VE too (less than 2 hr drive). Maybe you can take a slight detour and on the way there you can visit Volterra, which is half way in the Val d'Era (Era valley).

Try AutoEurope.com or their sister company Kemwel.com. One week rental on an economy car should be around $180-$200, for 4 days it should be a bit less.

I just got back from a similar trip last week. We took the train from Venice to Siena (switch in Florence). Stayed near the train station in Siena which isn't a long walk into the old city) and is convenient to the Hertz office. Toured Chianti one day . Drove to Montepulciano for one night and then drove to Orvieto for a night to drop the car before a train to Rome.
With your limited time Roberto's plan is good. I could have stayed longer in any of the places we visited but was glad I saw what I did and didn't regret one night stays because of the ease of travel with a car (and GPS). I liked being in the hill towns at night which is a little more difficult logistically because of limited driving and parking.

Once again, thank you all for your time and responses.

I have been unable to schedule a drop-off in Orvieto online. I can pick-up nearly anywhere but when I put Orvieto in as my drop-off destination I get no matches. That said, we could very easily drop off at FCO and train to the city on our last night. However, this seems a bit redundant as we'd be paying for a train from FCO to the city center and then back again the very next morning.

Has anyone dropped off a rental car at Termini? I am wondering if this is advisable considering the traffic levels in Rome.

Lucca now seems the most appealing as a home base for at least 2 nights. I love the idea of renting bikes and exploring...something we do in most other countries we visit.

Aside from my rental car situation...I gather that relying on train/bus would be sufficient, though slower, in getting to most locations we'd like to visit. If I am incorrect in this assumption please let me know.
