The best way is to simply walk to the "People Mover" from the ship -- not far at all. Take it to Piazzale Roma and walk to the vaporetto dock from there. You can go to google maps and use the aerial and street view features to "walk" the route before you ever leave home. Takes a bit of experimentation to learn to use it, but it's really pretty simple and is a great way to get the lay of the land -- and water in the case of Venice.
