We're hearing that taxis are perhaps not available in Venice to transfer from train station to hotel. Hotel is quoting around $250 U.S. for one person with one bag. Help?
Depends what you mean by a taxi. Venice has no roads, just canals and footpaths. That's what it is famous for. The options for transport in Venice are:
1) Walk
2) Vaporetto (water buses)
3) Water taxis (small motorboats).
This is a photo of the "road" outside Venice station (aka the Grand Canal, Venice "main street"): https://travellingdaveukdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/venice-railway-station.jpg
The pontoons with yellow stripe and the word "Ferrovia" (station) is the Vaporetto stop, with two Vaporetto arriving. You can also see small motor boats which could be water taxis.
This is one reason why hotels within walking distance of the station are popular, less distance to carry your bags. For your travel in Venice you need to research the Vaporetto system.
You could also get a water taxi to your hotel, I have no idea how much that costs, but USD 250 sounds way too much. Of course they would actually require paying in Euros.
water taxis are very expensive (but $250sounds way high) and obviously Venice proper won’t have car taxis because...it’s Venice and the streets are canals.
The location of your hotel matters. There are water taxis and they will likely be outside the train station. How close they can get is the question. It’s likeky they can get you within a few blocks for a lot less than $250. But again location matters.
Otherwise it’s a combination of vaporetto (water bus) and walking.
Provide the hotel location and hopefully someone will know a good option
hey cg
last September we reserved a water taxi from the airport to ferry stop san marcuola, near venezia casino and was 105 euros split 4 ways, was a no brainer. was a short walk to our fabulous ground floor apartment in canareggio, near train station. no schlepping over bridges, stairs, steps. you can check venicelink.com as there are shared rides for water taxis at 25 euros per person, or watertaxisvenice.com who we used. nice way to come into venice. Your hotel is crazy to ask that much, that's what you call a profit. where is your hotel at which can make a difference for what the route is to hotel? good luck let us know how you did.
aloha
This website says you can book a water taxi from Venezia Santa Lucia station to any hotel in Venice for 87 EUR, just a tad more than $100 US at current exchange. Tell us the name of your hotel. Maybe it is walking distance away.
