Venice Transportation Questions

I am arriving from Florence by train on July 25th. My question is, "Would it be better to arrive at Santa Lucia and store my bags at the train station until 9:00 p.m., and then train to Mestre, followed by a taxi to the Marriott( by the airport) that night?

Or, has anyone arrived at Mestre, taxied to the Marriott, and then taxied back to Mestre and trained over to Santa Lucia? I'm trying to watch my Euros and am uncertain of the taxi fares. Several sites I have looked at all have differing fares so I am confused.

I am in Venice until July 27 and don't want to miss a night, but also do not want to spend a fortune on taxis. :) Many thanks!

Are you planning on staying in the Marriot 2 nights and commuting to Venice? Will you want to ride the vaporettos while in Venice (I would assume so)? What time do you expect to arrive at Santa Lucia? Are you traveling alone or with others? Will you have a lot of luggage? Answers to these questions are needed to devise the optimal plan.

Hi Sam,
I will be staying 2 nights at the Marriott with my 18 yr. old son & we each will have a carry-on. We will be using the Vaporetto during our stay. We arrive @ 1:00 p.m. on the 25th and fly out at 1:30 p.m. the 27th. Many thanks!

As long as your flight is not an early morning one, then you are way better off to stay in Venice proper for those two nights.

Would love to but we are using Marriott points for our stay so that is not an option for us. :)

Ok, arrive at Santa Lucia and store your bags at the train station "Bagaglio Deposito". Buy two 36 hour vaporetto passes at the ticket both by the dock, get the round trip airport adder. That should be 33 euro and ask for one extra ride to the airport for two at 6 euro each, so that should be 39 euro each. At the end of the first day, collect you bags at the train station and walk across the bridge to Piazzale Roma and take the No 5 bus to the airport, then the Marriot shuttle to the hotel. Next day, do the same into Venice and back. Your ticket will expire 36 hours after you bought it, about 1:30 am. There is a vaporetto dock by Piazzale Roma so you're off as soon as you arrive there.

There is something called Rolling Venice Card for ages 14 to 29, but it is 4 euro for the card, then you can buy a 72 hour vaporetto pass for 20 euro and the rt airport adder for 8 euros, so in the end, you save one whole euro, not worth the effort IMHO.
Scan the card at the vaporetto dock before boarding the boats or on the bus. Remember you will be using the extra ticket for one ride to the airport.
The last bus to the airport is at 40 past midnight. http://www.actv.it/pdf/UM/U-5.pdf

And if you have no objections to alcohol, take your son to Paradiso Perduto on Fondamenta Misercordia, not too far from the train station. Young folks hangout. Everything shuts down pretty early in Venice, so no need to worry about making the last bus.

Looks like you're on the right track. With the afternoon arrival, I see no reason to go to the Marriott until late, and going early might entice you to nap all afternoon. Mestre station also has bag storage, if you find a need for it.
