Venice Transportation

I will be staying in Venice for two nights and found a place that looks great on Giudecca. Will it be easy to travel to the different areas of Venice from there? Is Giudecca itself a good area?

The Giudecca is an island across from the main part of Venice where you will find the sights you want to see and the preponderance of restaurants. Every time you come and go it is a trip on the vaporetto. Frankly you will waste a lot of time. If you had a week, it might be an option. Try to stay centrally instead. More charm, too.

From Giudecca you will need to take a vaporetto to and from the main areas of Venice. The Hilton Hotel, which is located on Giudecca, also has a shuttle. While it may be cheaper to stay there, your options for getting around town may be more limited than you wish, particularly if you want to be around early or late to avoid crowds.

Interesting. A friend who lives in Venice, in Sana Croce, is selling her apartment and will buy one on Giudecca. She says she is sick of the crowds, and Giudecca has what she needs.

Peter, it is one thing to live somewhere more remote when one lives in an area inundated by tourists. We did so in Rome. But when one only has one full day to see the sights, being so remote eats up valuable time.

Giudecca to San Zac. is about fifteen minutes depending on which stop on Giudecca. You can’t walk from Dorsoduro to the Piazza in fifteen minutes. It is a good idea to take a photo of the vap timetable posted at the pontoon.
Giudecca (funny, that, as the “Giu” has something to do with Judaism, and maybe the Jewish population lived on Giudecca prior to being confined to the Ghetto), in many ways Giudecca seems more “real” than much of Venice. So on San Giorgio, not really part of Giudecca, you find the Georges Cini Foundation, a resource for scholars from the whole world.

Venice is many layered.
