How does one travel economically in Venice? We plan to leave by train from Milan into Venezia S. Lucia this Sunday 9/29. Veniceconnected has ACTV travel passes for 12, 24, 36, 48 hors etc., but I am not clear if it can be used from Sta. Lucia train station to our hotel in San Marco as well. Do I need to purchase ticket separately from ACTV or is this segment included in ACTV? Purchase ahead of time or when we get there? Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi Mary, Yes the transport pass includes travel from the train station. The station is right in Venice and Venice itself isn't that big any way. It will probably be useful to study a transport map (just google Venice transport and you should find something useful) and also to check your hotel website or email them for directions from the vaporetto stop. There may not be an advantage in buying your tickets ahead as you are not going to get a much of a discount this close to your visit anyway. The tickets are easy to buy when you arrive. I seem to remember that the ticket booth is on the right as you leave the station and approach the Grand Canal. There are 2 or 3 vaporetti stops at Ferrovia (the train station) so be sure to be at the correct one for your vaporetto. The number 1 goes right passed San Marco but there are others that do so also. Have a wonderful trip

...and be sure to pack light! A single carry-on sized bag per person plus a small (Rick Steves Civeta) daypack will be manageable. The cobbled streets and many bridges with stairs are not the most hospitable for dragging baggage! Jan B
Jan (and fellow-travellers) We are taking train from Milan>Venice>Florence spending two nights each city and then by train again to a 5-day conference in Rome. We have one check-in size luggage each. If lugging two suitcases will be an issue, is there locker rental in Venezia S.L. train station so we can leave one of the suitcases? Thanks for the tip!

Mary, The answer to your luggage question depends on how many bridges are between the vaporetto stop and you lodgings. No stations have lockers any more for fear of terrorism. There is a left-luggage space at Venezia SL. Here are the details from the website Opening Hours 7/7 days 06.00 - 23.00 Charges 5,00 € the first 5 hours 0,70 € /hour from 6th to 12th hour 0,30 € /hour from 13th hour on Contacts 041 785 531
Kind of expensive....
