I hae been planning our train schedules for our italy trip this summer. We plan tp travel from Milan to Venice on a Sunday afternoon. Most of the options show both the Mestre and Santa Lucia staions (EC), but the later afternoon ones (CIS and ICPlus)only indicate the Mestre tain station. Is it possible to get from Mestre to Santa Lucia easily if we don't take the last EC train? There do not seem to be a lot of afternoon possibilities.

Absolutely, there are frequent ten minute shuttle trains (five or six an hour at times) and it shouldn't be a problem.

Mestre is on the "mainland" side and all of the major routes to and through the area go through here. Santa Lucia in almost a "spur" off from Mestre and the main lines into Venice, dead ending at Santa Lucia. I believe all trains to Santa Lucia stop, if not at least go through Mestre, and as was mentioned, a regional train runs between the two stations frequently.
