Does anyone know if you can purchase lunch at the Santa Lucia train station in Venice to bring to eat on the train?
There are a couple of food vendors in the station, an Autogrill I know, and a sandwich counter, good for something to take on the train, but probably there are better options nearby within a block or two down the main drag to sit down.
there are eateries in the station, from subs to pizza
Cindy,
Most larger stations in Italy have fast food joints, so you shouldn't have any trouble buying lunch there.
Many of the train stations will have something equal to a 7/11. Small grocery store to buy all kinds of good stuff including wine. We often just purchase bread, cheese, meat, and wine and put it together on the train.
Thanks all. We aren't looking to eat lunch at the train station. Now that I know we can purchase it at the station, are we allowed to eat that lunch on the train to Milan?
Frank, just read your message after my last post. Good to know that we can eat a make-shift picnic on the train, thank you!
Cindy,
The fast food places in stations are usually configured for providing ready made take-away sandwiches, beverages and so on for travellers. There aren't usually any tables or chairs, so that's the majority of their business. Yes, you can eat lunch on the train (many others do).
This was the only information I could find on the food services at Venezia S. Lucia......

Which departure will you be using? The trip to Milan is only 2H:35M.
Just left Venice a couple of weeks ago. Since our last visit in November they have expanded the food services there tremendously. Cannot believe how much this station has changed in the 6 years we've been going there!
You can bring wine on the train too to go along with your picnic
Cindy,
I observed many people enjoying their own private picnic on the trains to and from Venice. If you want something a little higher quality than the pizza or Panini from the train station, a block or so north of the station, on Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, is a cafeteria-style restaurant where you can purchase take-out. While not exactly great food, it is a few steps up from fast food.
Happy Travels.
