Which tours would you recommend for 1st time Venice Visitors ? We plan on doing the Venice Walking tour with Tours of Italy ...just to get an overview of things and we plan on using Rick's podcast for a grand canal tour from near the train station. What other things would other people recommend?

Can't remember which company I used but there are several who do walking tours. I did one when I first arrived and found it not only interesting but a great way to get my bearings. Google 'Venice + walking tours'.
We're going back to Venice in October and I can't wait to take the Classic Venice Bars Tour with Alessandro Schezzini. I figure the tour will pay for itself by teaching us how to order cicchetti at some of his favorite bars. The next three evenings we will be much more adventurous in having cicchettis for dinner and saving euros! Rick states that he leads tours generally on Mon, Wed and Friday at 6 pm.
Just a reply to Deborah's message - the bar crawl tour by Alessandro was not available at the beginning of April because he was traveling to adopt a baby. Through email, he told me that he would be unavailable for several weeks (possibly a month or two). Depending on when you are going, this tour may be an option. We followed the Grand Canal Tour route from the RS Italy book and thought it provided a great overview.
