Venice tour guide

I have one day in venice with three family members. We want to see the highlights and make good use of our time. Any suggestions?

We didn't use a guide in Venice since we had a few days to see it leisurely on our own. But we used Context Travel for tours in Rome, highly recommend them, and would book with them again. They work in quite a few cities in Europe and the US. http://www.contexttravel.com/city/Venice

We used a company, www.artviva.com, for several tours in Florence and Tuscany. They also have tours in Venice. As far as our experience goes with them in Florence, they are a terrific company to deal with, the deliver what they promise and their tour guides are very smart, engaging and really enthusiastic about the subject matter and their job generally. You can check out more about them on their website and search TripAdvisor and Fodor's for reviews of their Venice tours. I am a huge fan of tours when you don't have time to screw things up!

I would recommend the Doge's secret itineraries tour: www.museiciviciveneziani.it and then you can walk into St.Mark's basilica which is attached to it. Then go to Rialto and see the market as well. Finally, just roam about everywhere to take in the beauty of Venice's hidden corners. Finally go along Strada Nova (main shopping promenade) and check out the Jewish Ghetto. Those are the main sites which can easily be done in one day taking in the city. Walking distance from St.Mark's square to Rialto is ten minutes and from Rialto to the Jewish Ghetto is 20 minutes, so the historic city center is quite small. However, the Secret Itineraries tour is the best one for St.Mark's square. Then you can listen to Rick steve's audio tours for the Basilica, Grand Canal (while on the waterbus no.1) and St.Mark's square.
