Venice to Vienna Night Train Ticket Discount?

My wife and I are looking to take a night train from Venice to Vienna on May 20 and wanted to book a private two person cabin. I have read all over the place that we could expect discounts when booking well in advance. I read that tickets become available usually 90 days in advance, so waited until then. Today is approximately 85 days until May 20.

So i try to book the ticket for the cheaper 'Smart' price/fare on the Trenitalia site but it says "Error code: 2680 Preferred rates are no longer available. Change the rate." It doesn't let me do anything but the full price rate.
On the OBB website, I also just get charged the full standard rate.

It seems there is a discount if I just book a regular seat, but not if I book a sleeper cabin. Is this typical? Am I already booking too late and missed the deal? Is there any other way to save some money on this ticket? Thanks!

If the discount was available it appears that you missed. Have your tried a day or two before and after? May not fit your schedule but you might find the fares still available.

A private two-person room is first class. Either these are not discounted, or the few discount spots were booked before you tried. If that is how you want to travel, you will have to pay the current price. But I will suggest a night train is not the most comfortable way to travel.

I did look at trains up to a week later and couldn't get the smart rate.

Also, why would you suggest it's not a comfortable way to travel? I get its not exactly silent but is there something specifically bad beyond the obvious items that come to mind? Some people sleep just fine on planes, i imagine a train with a bed isn't bad.

Caveat: I have never take than particular night train, and I've never had a private compartment on any overnight train, just couchettes.

I assume you're interested in the direct train that doesn't require a connection--the one departing at 9:04 PM and arriving at 7:55 AM. That train makes 14 stops between Venice and Vienna. Many riders would find themselves waking up at every stop due to the braking or the noise.

The beds are like tables, they aren't comfortable. The cabins are small and not airconditioned. You'll need to open the window but the window is on the side of the train where other trains pass so it's really loud, waking you up all night long. There are many stops along the way making it hard to stay asleep.

The smart fares are only for second class fares and not for sleeper cabins. If you want a cabin you'll pay a lot more for it.

I'd at least take a look at flying, then make a decision. Looks like the only thing available is 1st class cabin, but it includes toilet and shower at 149 EUR per person. Looking at the schedule, the train will sit in Villach station for an hour until 1:45 am, then proceed to Salzburg, arriving at 4 am. So that will be your "quiet" time. After that, it will begin making regular stops.

I'v done the old City Night Line trains between Venice and Munich in a 2nd class cabin. No it was not the best night's sleep I ever had, but it saved a bit of time. If you've never done it, it is worth it for the experience and then you can decide if you'd do it again.
