Venice to Verona via the Dolomites

As I am planning out our big Italy trip, I am getting to the tail end of it (we have 5 weeks) and was considering hiring a car in Venice and heading northwards through the Dolomites and eventually back down, dropping it off in Verona. My current schedule allows 3 days for that, which may be a bit much. (I had originally planned to just take the train from Venice to Verona and then perhaps daytrip to Trento or somewhere on Lago di Garda).

Has anyone done this drive or something like it? How much time would it realistically take? I'm keen to be using the car to see the scenery, but not sitting in the car all day.

We spent 4 nights in Moso, near Sesto, just south of San Candido near the Austrian border, then returned via Verona. Very nice area, not as popular as the Val Gardena or Cortina but that is the charm. It is much faster to get to than the Val Gardena. There are some great lifts and easy hikes. The famous Tre Cime are nearby. We were there in June and everything was open but no crowds. It is a hugely popular area with skiers.
