Venice to Varenna with a stop in Milan

Is it possible in one day to take an early express train from Venice to Milan, see the Duomo and the Last Supper (with tickets purchased in advance) then take a rain to Varenna where we will be staying for a few nights. Or is this too much for one day? When do the last trains leave for Varenna each day?

That should easily be possible. If you choose a direct Freccia train from Venice to Milan, travel time is 2H:25M. Travel from Milan to Varenna is 1H:03M via Regionale train.

DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the Regionale train on the day of travel. If you forget that, you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

Indeed. According to the Trenitalia.com website, there is an hourly train from Milano Centrale to Varenna - the latest one is at 9:20 (21:20) at night. I think the only consideration would be to let your hotel know if you're getting in late.
