Venice to Trieste trains

Hi all,

There are 19 of us traveling from Venice to Trieste next September for a cruise. My husband and I have taken trains in Germany and Italy and France on our own with mostly success...but not with big groups. In your experience how crowded are the trains from Venice to Trieste? The travelers range in age from the 50's to the 80's so some people have limited physical abilities.

Thanks for your advice.

If you take a Frecciarossa from Venice Mestre (the land train station) you will have reserved, assigned seats and you won't have to worry about how crowded the trains are. Hopefully the Frecciarossa train times work with your schedule and will help you avoid any over crowding issues. In this case they honestly don't seem any faster but the reserved seating may make it worth it.

If not what day of the week and what time of day might help people determine crowds.

Have a great trip,

Those are mostly Regionale trains with no reservations. Our experience last September, traveling with a group of 8 family members, was that the Regionale trains can be extremely crowded. On one, we had to stand on the steps between the upper and lower seating areas the whole time. On another, we found seats on the upper level, but the aisles filled up with standing passengers and it was very hot and crowded, and we had trouble getting off at our stop.

However, looking at the schedule, I see one Frecciarossa train (FR 9797) departing Venezia Mestre at 10:11, arriving in Trieste at 12:05. These Frecce trains come with seat reservations. If I were doing this trip, I would book that train now. There are group discounts available on Trenitalia, but I don’t know how to go about that. Or you could just book the lowest Freccia days price that is offered for September, at 10,90 euro ( but limited and there may not be 19 tickets available at that price).

You will have to get yourselves from Venice Santa Lucia station to Venice Mestre on the mainland in time for that train, but that should not be difficult.

Considering how you describe some of the members of the group, and its size, how about chartering a small coach to drive you there. It would take just slightly longer than the train but you control the schedule.

If you still want to go by train, with a group that size, you could contact Trenitalia about group rates as well as seat reservations in the same coach.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your insights. I did look at train schedules.

We will be traveling on a Monday morning from Venice to Trieste. Any experience on trains on Mondays?

Again, my thanks.
