I've been eyeing this Bernina Express for years and am as close (going to be in Venice) as ever before. I've been pouring over train schedules trying to get to Tirano early enough, utilizing trains, and have stalled. I've also considered an overnight from Venice Mestre and it appears I should just book overnight accommodations, instead. Any advice, or suggestions from you pros?

This not possible as a day trip and even 2 days is mostly just riding trains, some of which is not scenic. Further, if it is planned before September 10, there is a replacement bus from Colico to Tirano while the rail line is repaired. If you only go as far as St Moritz, I guess it could be done in 2 days. Also, it will be more practical if you just use regular regional trains from Tirano to St Moritz. Otherwise their are only one or two actual Bernina Express trains each day and they cost more and many are already sold out for days this summer.

Thank you for your response, Sam. I've decided to get to Tirano the day before and have booked through.
I am hoping that if BE is booked, they wouldn't have accepted my reservation :).
