Venice to Siena

We are a family of 5 travelling from Venice to Siena on June 29th. I realize I should have purchased tickets a while ago, but our plans were too up in the air. We are renting a car in Siena.

It appears that the bus station is closer to the rental car agency than the train station - is that correct? I used to be able to find a train from Venice to Florence and then a bus from Florence to Siena on a site called Rome2Rio.com, but for some reason cannot find that route any more. And when I type in for a bus from Florence to Siena just on the Sena website, it states that this is unavailable. Am I missing something?

Wikitravel says:
By far the easiest way to get to Siena from Florence (though the train journey is much more picturesque). Take the SITA bus (located in a small underground bus depot across the street, to the west of Santa Maria Novella train station). After 1hr 20 minutes it will arrive at the bus terminal at Piazza Antonio Gramsci which is located well within the walls of the city, allowing for an easy walk to any of the city's attractions. The cost is €7.80 (May 2014).

The problem is that I cannot find the bus schedule from Florence to Siena. I USED to be able to find the bus on the Sena website - but no longer. Am I looking at this wrong?

It's sort of a big deal with three kids and a lot of luggage. Does someone have a link that seems to work? I can't find a schedule at all and should be able to. Thanks.

I did try to find the Florence (Firenze) to Siena bus on the Sena website but it says that there is no longer a bus on these routes. I know there are other buses but couldn't find schedules.

Two options. 1.Take the train all the way and take a taxi from train station to car rental. 2. Since you're going to rent a car when you get to Siena, why not rent car at Venice (or just outside) and drive to Siena instead.

Thank you, Nancy. Yes, I think it's strange that there are no buses from Florence to Siena anymore. I found tons of them last month, but now nothing.

We are not renting a car in Venice for a few reasons. The biggest one is that we don't want to rent a minivan and we will have a ton of luggage for the 5 of us. Well not a ton - but none that will fit in a car other than a van.

Florence-Siena bus service is among the most regular, reliable features of Italy. Web site updates are not.

There's no deadline to do to buy train tickets and paying $50 per person for a regular 2nd-class ticket there on short notice is much better than paying $150-200 per person on some longer or international routes. To get 5 seats together, however, you may want to book the Venice-Florence portion at www.trenitalia.com before you go. In Venice, some travel agencies also sell train tickets, closer to your sightseeing than the train station.
