Venice to San Gimignano

Hi, we are travelling from Venice to stay in Florence for a few days and would like to stay in San Gimignano for a night or two. Can we travel directly from Venice, bus or train, without going via Florence, or do we really need to rent a car?
Many thanks.

As far as I know yo must train it to Florence then bus it to San Gimi. We stayed in Siena then bussed it to San Gimi.

Thank you for your speedy reply. Do you know the name of the bus company so we can check out the timetable to surrounding villages, especially San Gimi?
Thanks again.

You really won't avoid the "via Florence" thing. The great high-speeds go with minimum stops to Florence from Venice. From Florence to San Gimignano, its by bus. And, it could be two different bus lines with Poggibonsi as the main changing place. First, you need to go to the SITA bus terminal which is about 800-1,000 feet to the SW of the Florence SMN train station. You can see it in the RS Florence & Tuscany book. I believe that you will change buses in Poggibonsi but I'm not sure if the SITA bus does both legs. For sure, you take the SITA bus to Poggibonsi. You change buses there and on you go to San Gimignano. From San G. there are direct buses to Siena and I believe connecting buses to Colle val d'Elsa and Volterra if you wish to explore there. The entire bus sytem in that area works quite well. You shouldn't have difficulties with the transfers.
