Venice to Rome Train then Bologna next day...or Venice/Bologna/Rome

Let me elaborate on the title...
We are looking to visit a family member who lives in Bologna or our July trip to Italy. We are going from Venice to Rome.
Would you suggest option 1 or 2?

1 - Take a direct train from Venice to Rome (staying here for 3 nights). Take a train from Rome to Bologna next day for our visit.
2 - Take a train from Venice to Bologna (4 pieces of luggage...would have to store in a luggage room...I hear that the train station has those...is it safe?) Spend 6 hours in Bologna...then get our luggage and train Bologna to Rome.
