venice to ravenna

This travel helpline is great! We plan on going from Venice to Ravenna for one night then on to Assisi. Any suggestions on train or bus travel to those destinations? thanks, Cheri

Train schedules are below: www.trenitalia.com
Enter from and to, use a date next week as test date. For time use 00. From Ravenna to Assisi would be a very quick drive if you rent a car. Freeway from start to end. By train it's a little longer as it requires a couple of changes along the way.

Ok, now that not a newby, you can start learning how to do this on your own. go to www.trenitalia.com click on the box that says "Tutti I Treni" (all trains, not just high speed trains) The boxes will be obvious, start station, end station, date and time. Here's the trick, unless you are traveling the next week, you get a message on regional trains in Italian "can only be bought within 7 days of departure". Right now, you're just shopping, so put in something in the next few days. Then you'll get all the trains and connections that will get you there. If its a regional train you get the price. Fast trains you get the best available current price.
Now give it a try and post back if you have any issues.

cheri, The quickest trip on that route appears to be a departure from Venezia Santa Lucia at 08:00, arriving Ravenna at 10:30 (time 2H:30M, 1 change at Ferrara, Regionale so DON'T forget to validate). I'd suggest getting an early start from Venice so that you'll have time to see some of the amazing mosaics and other sights in Ravenna. There's a good local walk shown in the Guidebook. I was there in June, and would recommend Hotel Italia. It's an easy five minute walk from the station, rooms are comfortable, it's an easy walk to some of the sights AND there's a convenient Laundromat around the corner. If you need restaurant recommendations, post another note. Cheers!

The mosaics in Ravenna are spectacular. You can also take a 10-minute city bus ride to Sant'Apollinare in Classe, just outside the city limits of Ravenna, for more great mosaics. I like the Hotel Centrale Byron in the middle of the historic center, great breakfast and great location.

We also took the train from Venice to Ravenna. We stayed at Casa Masoli about a 10 minute walk from the train station and close to San Vitale and Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.
