Venice to Northern Croatia

A friend and I are traveling from Venice then to the Northern portion of Croatia where we want to rent a car. Any ideas on the best way to get there? I've seen a ferry that leaves at 5:40 a.m. and goes to Rovinj, but I'm not seeing anything else that might be more convenient. Thank you, Millie

Millie, my fiance & I did a similar trip a couple of years ago. We rented the car in Venice and drove around (it's about 2.5 hours to the Croatian border from Venice). You do have to drive for a brief section in Slovenia (they have strict tolls) but there are significant surcharges to renting a car in Croatia (although the war is long over, the rental car companies still view it as more dangerous). I think we saved 20-30% renting the car in Venice, even with the tolls we had to pay.

As an aside, If you will be in Istria, Rovinj, Pula and Motovun (all described in Rick's travel guide) are must see places. Definitely try Trattoria Toni in Rovinj for a meal (local place, not on the water but delicious).
