I have a flight that will leave Marco Polo at about 09:30. Is the Alilaguna the best way to get to the airport? Also, how long should I allow for security at the airport? I will be staying on the Riva degli Schiavoni near the Arsenale vaporetto stop.
Is your flight to somewhere within Europe or back to the US? If to somewhere in Europe you only have to be there one hour ahead. Alilaguna is one way to get there. The bus from Piazzale Rome is the other. We've done both and frankly I prefer the bus.
I agree with Michael, I had a 10 AM flight and the bus worked great. I rode the Vaporetto from San Stae to P. Roma and walked the few metres to the stop where the bus awaited. On arrival, bus discharged its passengers at the Marco Polo Departures door. Cost for both was included in my Vaporetto pass.
I'm going to disagree with the other folks and sugest Alilaguna. From where you are near Arsenale, The vaporetto and the bus ride will probably take you either tha same amount of time or about a half an hour longer. you will also have to change to the bus at P le Roma. Alilaguna will take just over an hour and cost about 3 euro more per person. You won't have to change transport but you will have to walk at bit (about 5-10 minutes) from the airport docks to the terminal. You'll want Linea Blu.
Thanks for the info. I will be flying back to the US. It would seem that the Alilaguna would be the best option. I realize that it takes roughly 70 minutes to get to the stop near Marco Polo, but how much overall time should I allow to make my flight?
You will probably want to take the 05:58 boat from Arsenale that gets you to the airport docks at 07:07. That should put you in the terminal around 07:20.
Is the two-hour ahead-of-time a requirement at Marco Polo? I won't be checking any luggage and I'll be traveling on a Tuesday. I certainly don't want to miss my flight, but I also like sleep. :^)
How about reverse? Flying into Marco Polo, staying near the Rialto. Do you suggest train, bus, or Alilaguna? I will be with my wife who has never been to Venice - does one method leave someone a little more awestruck for their first visit?
The Alilaguna boat does (obviously) take you across the lagoon, so it's more scenic in that sense. But it sits very low on the water, and the engine is very loud. There are videos of that ride on Youtube, if you search for them.
John - the next boat from Arsenale leaves at 06:58 and arrives at the Marco Polo Docks at 08:07. which should out you in the terminal at 08:20
And just to make my original question a little clearer: Does your flight out of Venice take you directly non-stop to the US? Or do you change planes somewhere in Europe? If the former, you need to be there 2 hours ahead. If the latter, then only one hour.
Thanks Michael. Venice to Atlanta (and then Oregon - long day!), so I'll get to Marco Polo at least two hours ahead of time then.
