Best as in

Fastest: Take a taxi from Piazzale Roma

Cheapest (and still reasonably fast): Take a bus from Piazzale Roma

Most fun (but expensive): Take a water Taxi

My choice: Take the water bus (http://www.alilaguna.it/)

We took a taxi the other day, and the trip was 15 minutes or so--45 Euros.
The Vaparetto was 15 Euros for each person.

FYI: For a relatively small airport, it was very busy @ 11:00 a.m. and the check in lines were relatively long. Many travelers were coming off cruises.

The above comment does not state where the taxi originated, but it must be Piazzale Roma, not San Marco, which would require a water taxi and cost much more.

There is no vaporetto to the airport. The boat line that carries people to the airport from various locations in Venice is the Alilaguna, and the link is provided in the second post. Cost is €15 (€14 if you buy online in advance) and the trip takes an hour or more. Although the trip goes across the lagoon, it is not particularly scenic as the windows are generally fogged up or just not particularly clean. But it is an easy way to get to the airport, with no changes on the way.

The other inexpensive option is to take a vaporetto from San Marco to Piazzale Roma! and the airport bus from there. This costs around €13--- €7 for the vaporetto and €6 for the bus. ( Those are last year's prices and may have changed so check). This involves a change and the vaporetto in particular may be crowded. But if you already have a vaporetto pass it is very inexpensive.

The private water taxis are expensive but may be useful for a party of six. Or consider a shared water taxi, which is pre-booked and may make several stops to pick up people on the way. Note that one person here has reported that his pre-booked water taxi never showed, so make sure you have a confirmation and the correct phone number in case of problems.

Hi!

We're going to have an EUrail pass. Is it possible to use that to get from Marco Polo to the San Marco area? TIA!

Agnes,

since the original poster never came back to give details on either of their posts a month ago I expect they won't mind you hitchhiking on it.

The answer for you is, no. There is no train to the airport and none of the local Venice ACTV waterbuses or any of the alilaguna or private taxis accept Eurailpass.

By the way, Agnes, I hope you know that with pass you have to pay for reservations on every Italian train that ride except the slowest trains, the Regionale. Last time I looked it was €3 a leg for InterCity and €10 per leg for the Freccias. Italo trains don't accept it at all, nor do Circumvesuviana. Or certain trains in the south of Italy. It may have changed that TreNord does now, but I'm not sure - they didn't use to.

Agnes, I'm going to assume you did your research about the Eurail pass and that it makes sense for your particular itinerary. (Generally speaking, within Italy those passes don't make sense.)

As for getting into the historic center of Venice from Marco Polo, let me put in a plug for the bus. It's not terribly romantic, but it's efficient and cheap and just outside the Marco Polo doors. The Alilaguna boat, on the other hand, is waaaaaaaay down a long path from the airport, and you have to haul all your bags. Those boats are often absolutely packed with people and luggage, and they're noisy (both the boat and the people). The diesel fumes can be a real irritation and you sit down so low in the water that the views out the dirty windows are pretty dismal.

Happy travels!
