Has anyone ever travelled from Venice to Ljubljana? If so, by train or bus? I'm thinking of going there for 2-3 nights once I've settled in Venice....
thank you!
A number of us have used and been pleased with this transfer service:
https://www.goopti.com/en/
We used Go Opti and were impressed with their professionalism, promptness, and door-door service. I'd highly recommend them.
I did not know that.....so, I'd have to take the train from one (S. Lucia) to the other (Maestre?)......
Did the reverse in October jubluana to Trieste. Took the train - because we like trains, and didn't want to muck around with buses or feel the fear with Italian drivers LOL
There were only about 3 trains a day from Ljubljana to Trieste - so we got the early morning one. - its a lovely trip and spectacular when you drop down into Trieste doing a long zig-zag to drop height. Trieste train station is being partly renovated and there was no left luggage - found a spot about a block away to park our bags -and then walked into the the centre of town for a few hours.
There is a train every 30min or so to Venice but make sure you get the right one - Maestre or Lucia and get the express - you do this all from the ticket machines which speak fluent English.
Very comfortable trains, ran on time , highly recommend spending the time on Trieste on the way -its quite different from both other cities
To the OP.
Download Rome to Rio app. It helps as the first place to start looking at transport options. Even from your hotel, not just city to city. So it would include any walking needed to get to the train or bus station and at your arrival end too.

In 2019 we took a bus from Venice airport to Ljubljana. The bus line was Nomago. The bus was very comfortable and had a w/c. The journey was just over 3 hrs. and you are dropped off at the Ljubljana bus station. Highly recommended.
I've gone from Venice to Ljubljana a few times and recently back from Ljubljana to Venice Marco Polo airport. The first times, I used a Slovenian company called DRD to get from Mestre train station to Ljubljana. For my recent trip, I used GoOpti. (FYI, if someone gives you a referral link, you can save 5 euros on the GoOpti ride.)
GoOpti worked great. The price depends on how far in advance you book and how flexible you are (and how full they are). If you need to depart at a very specific time, it's going to cost a lot more than if you can pick a window of a few hours' time. (They tell you the exact pick-up time the day before.) It might cost a little more to go from Venice directly to your hotel in Ljubljana, but they can do that. Dropping you at the Ljubljana rail/bus station is probably going to be a little cheaper. (Depending on where you will stay, it may not be that far of a walk from there to your hotel. Ljubljana is not big.)
GoOpti CAN pick you up in Venice, not just at Mestre - they can pick you up at Piazzale Roma, the only place in Venice where cars and buses are allowed. Piazzale Roma is not far from the Venice Santa Lucia train station.
There may also be buses going directly from Piazzale Roma to Ljubljana e.g. FlixBus. There may be more options from Mestre train station.
Yes, you can take a train from Venice via Trieste to Ljubljana now. It was not possible years ago when I first traveled from Venice to Ljubljana. I like trains and would have preferred this, but it's a bit longer and more complicated than just taking a bus or shuttle like GoOpti. I'd look at your options and see what works best for you.
we just booked go opti to get from our RS Village Italy tour ending in Lake Orta to the start of the RS Adriatic tour starting later that day in Slovenia. Easy to book but this is our first go opti experience. Seems less stressful that flying or train.
We took the Flex bus from Venice Airport to Ljubljana. It was easy, comfortable and inexpensive.
Ignore above post it is incorrect. It was the Nomago bus as posted earlier.
