We are spending 3 nights in Venice and then going to Slovenia, where we will pick up a rental car at LJU, ultimately dropping the car off in Croatia. While in Venice, we will be staying in the San Marco district right on the Grand Canal. Transportation into and out of Venice seems expensive and complicated. We are splurging on a water taxi from the airport upon arrival. When we depart, we could go back to the airport via water taxi to pick up transport to LJU, or we could choose a pickup point closer to San Marco and take either a bus, GoOpti, or a private car. Convenience is more important to us than cost. What is the easiest option and how much harder is the less expensive route, considering we will each have a large bag plus a carryon to tote around until reaching our transport point?
Take a vaporetto to Piazzale Roma. Can Go Opti pick You up there? Where is your hotel in San Marco?
Address in San Marco is Sestiere di San Marco, 3944, Venice, Veneto 30124, Italy. It’s a privately owned apartment. Yes, Go opti can pick up at Piazzelle Roma.
You are on Calle del Traghetto Vechio, just off the Grand Canal. You could walk around to the Sant'Angelo vaporetto dock, or get a water taxi right by your door. Motoscafi Venezia quote 70 EUR to Piazzale Roma.
Thank you! If it were you, would you just rent a car in Venice instead? Or get separate transport and pick up the car in Slovenia? By the time we pay for a water taxi and transportation from Venice to Slovenia, the cost difference isn’t huge and having the car for the drive to Slovenia would give us more flexibility to make stops along the way.
Mary, the challenge with driving is one of you will be focused on driving, the other will be focused on navigating and you probably won't enjoy the scenery as much as in a shuttle. The opposite point is that you will have flexibility and no need to share a vehicle with strangers.
Yes, that’s definitely true but we do generally prefer to drive ourselves so we can stop whenever and wherever we want. Originally I was having a problem finding a car we could rent in Venice and drop in Croatia, but now I have found some options and wondering if that would be better/easier.
Renting a car in Italy and driving to Slovenia may be problematic. There will be a significant international drop fee unless you return it to Italy. If, as you say, you are continuing to Croatia and drop it there, likely even bigger fee. Second, the rental agency may say you are not allowed to drive it in Slovenia or Croatia. Violating this will void your insurance. Make sure you have international drivers Permit to go with your drivers license.
Thanks for the warning about this. Fortunately the insurance company does allow the car to be taken to Slovenia and Croatia. There is a big drop fee, but we really don't have any alternative to avoid this as we have to drive from Slovenia to Croatia anyway. We've always gotten IDP's and have never been asked to show them in Europe or Australia, but there's always a first time so we will do it again.
Hi, a little off topic but we are thinking of going to Venice 1 week and getting to Rovinj for a week (at mid to end of July). Following this discussion because we haven't decided how to get to Rovinj. I was thinking of hiring a car service (about 400 euros).
Where do i get an IDP? I'm US citizen
What options did you find for rental car from Venice and what is drop fee?
Should I rent a car in Rovinj?
Any suggestions for the trip are welcome!
TIA
From what I've found, the only company that will rent a car in Venice and allow drop-off in Croatia is Avis, and it's quite a bit more expensive. Personally I wouldn't take a private car service because there are lots of charming places to explore outside of Rovinj and if you don't have your own vehicle, you will be severely limited on what you can see. We decided to take a private water taxi from our accommodation to another location where we can pick up Go Opti to Slovenia airport. We'll pick up our car in Slovenia and it will already have the required Slovenia decal, and we'll drop it off in Croatia. There is a significant drop charge, but we really have no choice as we want to use the car to explore a good bit of Croatia and it would not be practical to return it back to Slovenia.
Sorry, where is LJU?
The only pickup point closer to San Marco is Piazale Roma, easily reachable by No 1 vaporetto.
Thanks! We plan to take a water taxi although it is more expensive. I feel like it will be less stressful since it can pick us up right at our apartment. Once we are there and see how the vaporettos work and where to pick them up, we’ll know better for next time.
LJU is the airport in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
We took Tripsair ( a Slovenian transportation co) from Piazzale Roma Venice to Lubjiana bus station May 2023 for 30 euros. It was a 8 passenger mini bus and went very smoothly. They also pickup from the Venice airport. The Lubjiana bus station is near the train station so you may find a rental car close to there.
That sounds like a great option. We will check that out. Thank you!
...going to Venice 1 week and getting to Rovinj for a week
A nice way to get to Rovinj from Venice is to take a boat. There are usually several departures in the afternoon. Nothing beats arriving somewhere by ship in my opinion.
Will you need to purchase auto vignettes for the countries involved? Have a great trip!
According to my online research, Slovenia requires a vignette and that is one reason we want to rent our car there, as all rental cars will already have it. Croatia does not require a vignette. These are the only two countries where we will be driving until we fly to Greece.
After researching different options, we have booked:
- Water taxi from our apartment in Venice to Tronchetto
- GoOpti from Tronchetto to LJU where we will pick up our rental car
This was far less expensive than private transport from Venice to Ljubljana, and also than renting a car in Venice and returning it in Croatia. It still adds over 200 Euros to the cost of our trip, but such is life - it costs money to get from Point A to Point B, and we really didn't want to skip Slovenia.
Thanks to all who responded with ideas and suggestions! Your input was very helpful.
