My husband and I want to travel by rail from Venice to Lausanne on September 27, 2015. We would welcome information on the best way to book the trip.

Hi sue. You can easily buy this trip yourself online.
- Use Italian train site trenitalia.com (use station name Venezia S Lucia); or
- Use italiarail.com - you will pay a $5 handling fee, but the web buying process is easier.
In either case, because you are buying in advance, you have the option to get a great discount price if you are willing to buy a non-refundable ticket.

You won't be able to book tickets for 2015 until about 120 days prior to trips which use high speed trains (ie: Freccia) and 90 days for other trains. I checked one of the trips from Venezia S. Lucia to Lausanne for this week. The first trip of the day appears to be at 08:50, arriving Lausanne at 15:42, Base Fare €105.50 PP (although that will be much cheaper if you can get the discounted fares). This is just an approximation, since both the departure times and fares could very well change by Sept. 2015.
You can book tickets either on the Trenitalia or Italia Rail websites (you'll probably find the website more "user friendly" at Italia Rail). You may find it helpful to have a look at the excellent Ron In Rome and / or Man In Seat 61 websites.
