Venice to Fivizzano to Florence

My sons are flying in and out of Venice in a couple of weeks.
After Venice, they stay in Fivizzano for 2 nights. Then to Florence for 3 nights then to Rome - train back to Venice.
The question is: Should they take a train to a car rental near Fivizzano and then drop it off in Florence or take a train to Florence and rent a car in Florence, drive to Fivizzano and then drive back to Florence to drop off the car.
My suggestion is to take a train to Fivizzano or nearby rental car location (spend their time in Fivizzano) then drive to Florence and drop of the car near Florence.
Seems easy to me but I think they need your expert advice to help them make a decision.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I would probably rent in Venice and drive from there.
Fivizzano is not near Florence, it’s near Aulla. So to get there you drive Via Bologna then Parma then take the A15 to the Cisa Pass.
They could also rent along the way in either Parma or Bologna, if they want to minimize driving time. Parma is closer, but Bologna has rental agencies next to the train station.
If they really want to minimize driving time, but hugely increase train time, then they can rent a car in La Spezia.

I don't know what is best, but Rome2Rio may provide some useful high-level information. They should not trust the displayed train/bus fares, travel times, or frequencies, but Rome2Rio's information on service availability and probable change-points is usually accurate. I've linked to routing proposals from Venice to Fivizzano. They should also check Florence to Fivizzano. It appears that taking the train to Bologna, Parma or La Spezia should also be considered.
